Openroad is a mobile app that aids in detecting car crashes and gets you help from real, trained crash responders. Even in cases where you can’t respond, a trained responder can send an ambulance or police assistance. Openroad also provides a variety of features to help protect you and your wallet after a crash.

You heard that right. Smartphones are loaded with sensors - a gyroscope that senses fine-grained rotation, a magnetometer that senses changes in the magnetic field, a barometer that senses changes in pressure (like when an airbag goes off!) and so on. All these sensors, when processed through very carefully tuned machine learning algorithms, can detect car crashes.

We’ve trained our predictive model on thousands and thousands of real verified crashes so we’re confident it performs well.

Openroad is available on iPhones and Android Devices. Specifically, it will work on iPhones running iOS 12 or above as well as Android Devices running Android 8 or above.

Openroad has been designed to detect severe car crashes. Openroad will not detect all crashes, including very light taps or fender benders. And while we try our hardest, it may occasionally fail to detect even severe crashes. The app can't detect crashes when your phone is in Low Power Mode and it goes without saying that it won’t detect events when your phone is not in the car.

In data science speak, these are called “False Positives”. Like all technology, Openroad is not perfect. We’ve invested a great deal of effort to minimize false positives and we look at dozens of signals to make accurate crash predictions. False positives are most likely to occur when you’re driving and slam on the brakes hard. They are not likely to occur if you simply drop your phone or shake it hard.

If you are notified about a crash but you weren’t in one, we’ll provide the opportunity for you to provide feedback. We really appreciate your feedback as it helps us to improve our models and detect crashes better in the future.

Openroad is free! Roadside/towing services that are offered from within the app or via our trained responders, are not free.

If you’re in a severe crash and have the Openroad app on your phone, Openroad should, as described above, detect the crash. We’ll first make an automated call to verify if you were in a crash. If you answer that call, we’ll provide the option to connect you with a trained emergency responder. Crash responders can do things like provide guidance at the crash scene and, if needed, send police or an ambulance to your exact location.

If you don’t answer that automated call, a live responder will call you directly to see if you need help. In the event they don’t reach you, they’ll coordinate with 911 to dispatch police or ambulance.

Openroad responders are specifically trained in handling emergency car crash situations. Collectively, they handle over 50,000 of these kinds of calls annually. They are trained to be empathetic and are able to quickly request police or ambulance as needed.

Nope. Openroad wakes up when you start driving and automatically detects car crashes without you doing anything.

After a crash, it can sometimes be hard to know exactly where you are. “I’m on a freeway, near a tree, and some grass…” The Share My Location feature shows your exact location on a map with your address, and you can then just tap to share that location with your loved ones or others by sending a text message.

Openroad is currently available in the United States and our trained responders are only available to respond to events in the United States.
